As part of the BMUV-funded ecReUse project, representatives from South Africa and Germany convened for a technical workshop in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality. The focus was on technologies such as membrane bioreactors and biogas production, along with their potential applications in the region. Practical insights were provided through case studies, including those from the automotive industry. The workshop’s goal was to advance sustainable technologies to secure regional water and energy supplies.

During the ecReUse project, stakeholders participated in a technical workshop aimed at showcasing innovative solutions for water treatment and energy generation, while exploring potential fields of application. Highlights included presentations on ultrafiltration processes in membrane bioreactors and anaerobic reactors for biogas production. These approaches aim to enhance the efficiency of wastewater treatment plants and contribute to water security in the region.

A standout moment was a case study from a German automobile manufacturer that successfully uses reclaimed water in production, demonstrating the practical feasibility and economic benefits of the technologies. The workshop provided participants with the opportunity to develop ideas for regional implementation and plan next steps. The project is making a crucial contribution to addressing socio-economic and climate-related challenges in the Eastern Cape.
