During a recent visit to South Africa, key discussions were held and site visits conducted as part of the ecReUse project, which focuses on improving resource efficiency through wastewater treatment and sustainable energy production.

The ecReUse project is at the cutting edge of innovation in the areas of wastewater treatment, water reuse and sustainable energy production in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. By focusing on these critical areas, the project aims to significantly increase resource efficiency while providing training for industry professionals to set a benchmark for sustainable development in the region.

Recently, two FiW representatives travelled to South Africa to meet and exchange with the local project partners about this BMUV-funded project initiative. During the visit, they discussed upcoming joint tasks, reviewed the progress of the project and visited the wastewater treatment plant and nearby industrial sites.

The visit also served to officially inform the South African partners about the start of the project and allowed for in-depth discussions about the size of the plants and the specific local conditions that will determine the development of the project. Following an initial online kick-off meeting in September, at which all German and South African partners will have the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas, a delegation trip to South Africa is planned for the end of October.

As part of this delegation trip, a workshop on advanced water treatment technologies will take place, bringing together interested partners and guests to discuss the economic viability of these technologies in the South African context. The visit will culminate in an official project opening at the local wastewater treatment plant, which will also be attended by political representatives and represents an important milestone in the development of the project.
